Greece is the place of dreams for many travelers. In addition to all the history and culture beauty did you know that they have high quality wines and that they are unique in the world? One of the most famous wine regions in Greece is one of the most visited Islands: Santorini.

The most interesting wines of Greece comes from indigenous varieties adapted to the warm and arid climate. There are more than 200 indigenous varieties and almost none of them are grown in other parts of the world. The three varieties with the highest international reputation are linked to three denominations of origin.

Naossa DOP

The Xinomavro red grape variety is linked to the Naoussa DOP that lies to the north of Greece in the Macedonian region. This grape variety is compared to Nebbiolo for having high levels of tannins, capacity to age and to develop complex earth and spice aromas.

Nemea DOP

The grape variety Agiorgitiko is related to Nemea DOP, a region located in the north of Peloponnese. The best wines of this region have a deep rubi colour, high level of soft tannins, low to medium acidity, and has sweet spicy and red berries flavours.

Santorini DOP

The white grape variety Assyrtiko is linked to the denomination of Origin Santorini, a volcanic island located in the Aegean Sea. The vines are driven into a bird nest shape. This format protects the vines and the grapes from the strong winds of Santorini. The dry wines of this grape have fragrant aromas and concentrated flavours of citrus fruit and ripe seed fruit that are balanced by the high acidity of this grape variety. Assyrtiko wines labelled as Nykteri are always aged in oak.
