My WSET 2 experience

On the way to growth, knowledge is essential. Growth does not necessarily need to be on the professional side, many times, it must be personal. Knowledge feeds the soul, provides good moments and great friendships. Besides, it turns into culture and then it transforms lives. How about a little more wine knowledge?

The Wset Wine Course 2

Regardless of a professional career, I believe it would be interesting for the wine lover to apply for “Wine & Spirits Education Trust” (WSET) courses, up to the second level! Today I will talk about my experience with Wset 2 in Brazil, at the Wine School.

We even had White Zinfandel! Aromas of strawberry jumping out of the glass!

I took the course in December 2017 in Rio de Janeiro, at the Copacabana Pallace Hotel. It started on a Sao Paulo state holiday and so it didn’t affect my work in Sao Paulo. So I was able to reconcile my work in another city (It wasn’t holiday in Rio) and the course.
One of the advantages of taking the course with the Wine School is that the classes are taught in a few days. In this way, students who live in other cities or who have little time available are able to organize themselves. After enrollment, the course material is sent for the student to study before, for at least 12 hours before classes. In my case, I found the contents dense, with plenty of details and the memorization is more efficient when there is already previous experience, for example, some trip already made or some wine tasted. One of the most important things about the wine course material was the technical sheet for the tasting that helps the student to get used to the systematic way to evaluate the quality of a wine.

Another differential of the course of the Wine School is the team of professionals. The teacher who taught us is trying the title of Master of Wine, one of the highest professional qualifications in the wine industry. From 1955 to today, few professionals in the world have achieved this qualification. Bernardo gave us a lot of information and shared a little of his experiences with us, besides he was a great reference for our group in the wine tasting.

Tasting of German and Australian Riesling.

We have made several wine tastings from all over the world, from all styles, making comparisons between grapes, between grape percentages and between regions. Many of the wines chosen in the tasting of the Wine School were of excellent quality, including an unforgettable Barolo that made me dream of a cellar full of Barolos (Help, is in the figure below haha!!).

Highlight to the Chateau Ramon dessert wine, Monbazillac, a better relation of cost-benefit than the Sauternes.

All the tastings were very interesting, mainly of the wines of New Zealand, Australia, South Africa-which are little known by us, but which are of excellent quality-and of the sparkling, dessert and fortified wines ( including the Xerez).

Differences between Chardonnays of New Zealand (Marlborough) and Burgundy (Poilly-fuissé) and percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
These were the tastings of Syrah (north and south of the Rhône, France and Clare Valley in Australia)
Think of a good Xerez…

There were many other tastings, including spirits, but there are so many, I will leave for the upcoming posts on Instagram!

The commercial manager of the Wine School, Edna, is very helpful, any questions about registration and course materials, just send an e-mail to vendas@thewineschool.com.br

The very best,

Cheers!
